CFB: USC’s Stafon Johnson Awake After Weight Accident & Emergency Surgery

Posted by Just10 on September 29, 2009

Wow! This is a crazy story! USC’s leader in touchdowns, senior Stafon Johnson, was lifting 275 pounds while weight training when the bar slipped out his right hand. Although he was being spotted by a weight trainer, the bar slipped and land on his neck! Immediately, Johnson began coughing up blood and had to be rushed to the California Hospital Medical Center. Doctors had to perform a tracheotomy and reconstructive surgery to repair his crushed neck and larynx which lasted seven intense hours.

Stafon is now awake and communicating via hand signals and writing. He is expected to make full recovery but most likely will not play for the Trojans again. Doctors say that a man of lesser stature would have died from the accident but the thickness of Johnson’s neck muscles probably saved his life. Doctors also say he will play football again after he has full recovered.
